The Ile de Ré
on Saturday, September 25 2010 - France
We've been to the wonderful Ile de Ré, camping for a week on the Atlantic side of the island. The weather was perfect every day and we could not have chosen a better place to spend the very last beautiful days of September. In fact, rain came in the day after we left.
The island is situated about half-way down the west coast of France and is linked to the mainland by a toll bridge.
We quickly set up camp and after supper walked down to the beach using the camp site's private access. The site, called Les Amis de la Plage at the village of Le Bois Plage-en-Ré, closes at the end of this month and there were very few people about - just as we like it.
We are very pleased with our tent (new this year). As every camper knows, it pays to be tidy. So ten out of ten to me!
Almost everyone else had large camper vans like these or caravans with awnings and everything else a holiday maker could need. The site is entirely built on sand so there was a lot of sweeping going on each morning.
At one end of the camp site were these tents which could be hired equipped with electricity and water. The shower block, a short walk from our pitch, was clean and well appointed. The water is solar heated and plentiful for both showering and washing up.
All night long we could hear the waves coming in, making the sand smooth and perfect and lulling us to sleep.
