Our summer project
on Saturday, June 7 2008 - News from the garden
Hugh has designed a summer house, along the lines of a yurt but made of wood.
In early May, turf was removed in a circle and work with Fu-fu, our carpenter friend, began. Gravel was laid over a sheet of waterproof membrane, followed by supports for the floor and the floorboards themselves. Rain frequently stopped play but eventually the circular wooden centrepiece could be raised over the tall hazel tree which remains inside the structure. Next, the supporting uprights and then the roof beams and the roof itself.
Now we are three-quarters of the way towards our summer house. Once the roof has been covered with dark green tarred shingles, we will decide how many of the eight sides will become walls.
