Winter

dsc03017.jpg

I made my bergamot lemon marmalade in two batches.

dsc03020.jpg

Twenty full jars (including some tumblers as I ran out of jam jars). The winter sun shone brilliantly as I worked enveloped in lemon scented steam.

dsc03029.jpg

We left the warm house to walk down to the horses. It's been quite a while since we visited Sienna. She hasn't forgotten Hugh. He dug into his pockets for horse sweets and had a whispered conversation with her.

dsc03036.jpg

Bronze came from the top of his field as soon as he saw us at the gate. He had been rolling so his thick coat was caked with mud. In spite of this, he remains the elegant, highly trained animal he always was and bowed beautifully on receiving a sweet. Not bad for an old man of twenty two!

A painful decision

p1100276.jpg

Sienna is Hugh's English Thoroughbred mare. She will be 9 years old this week.

p1090600.jpg

She was a rescue horse and came to us three years ago in a bad way. We don't know a great deal about her background, only that she was trained to race and was of a nervous disposition. She was thin and ill in March 2008 and we felt very sorry for her.

p1090679.jpg

Hugh spent all his free time with her. He took her for walks in the forest and gently eased her into her new life in the country.

p1020287.jpg

He played games with her to strengthen her muscles and trained her (or tried to!) in the field which became her home with two other mares.

img_1420.jpg

She was nourished and groomed with all Hugh's care and expertise.

p1010178.jpg

He rode her whenever he could, mostly in the forest around our village and sometimes across open pasture land.

p1100205.jpg

We loved to admire her running in the sunshine with her mane flying.

In the past year, Hugh has had serious health problems and has come to the painful decision to give up Sienna to someone who will exercise her and give her the good home she deserves. Quite by chance, a new owner has been found who lives locally. She and Ingeborg have come to an arrangement whereby Sienna can stay in her field where she feels safe (she is still a nervous horse) and where she will continue to live with Joy and Liberté, the companions she is used to.

Lucky Robin will still be able to ride Sienna. She has had special permission.

We feel immensely relieved about Sienna's future, although Hugh had some sad moments when he parcelled up her belongings - her brushes and bridles and so on - to pass to her new owner. And as I trawled through the hundreds of photographs that I have taken of them over the past 3 years, I couldn't help crying a bit too.

p1100368.jpg

In a way, I hope Hugh doesn't read this. It will make him as tearful as I was. But at least he can visit her from time to time when he feels better about the whole thing.

Theirs was a true love affair.

An intruder

When we walked down to the horses today, we found three of the mares standing well away from the field gate, where they usually wait impatiently to be fed. Their coats were wet from running in the spring sunshine. They had been chasing a goat!

A neighbour's nanny had come into our horses' field to help herself to their grass and hay. Only Sienna was undismayed by this intruder and carried on grazing.

Hugh likes goats - he used to keep several for milking. This one was very gentle and waited with him while the mares settled to their feed.

She tried nibbling Hugh's coat and then took advantage of this visit to top up with salt from the horses' salt lick.

Like an uninvited guest, she hung around for hay, sharing Sienna's pile while the others were too nervous to come near.

Finally, to give Liberté, Joy and Uhlyara a chance, Hugh had to take her away, the nanny refusing and lying on the ground until he managed to drag her off.

It was only then that the three of them could help themselves to hay, keeping close together as they chewed.

Not very brave, are you, girls?

First ride of the year

Robin and Hester are back in France with Dan.

Christmas in Amsterdam was fun, there were parties for Robin's and Hester's birthdays and Robin enjoyed school. But her favourite horse, Sienna, was always in her mind and she was thrilled to be invited by Ingeborg for a gentle ride in the forest.

For her birthday Robin was given everything a young horsewoman needs for the all-important grooming: brushes, combs and a sponge. Sienna hates water though, as Robin reminded us.

First, a good brush down to get that shaggy winter coat shining. Next, her hooves, clogged with mud and little stones, were scraped.

Sienna's three companions looked on enviously as they worked. Who wouldn't want to go for a walk in the forest with such an enthusiastic rider?

Robin has grown since we last saw her in December. Hugh will have to punch some more holes in her stirrups.

Louvia led the way. She knows every inch of the forest.

More curious neighbours: these donkeys live near the holiday yurts at the top of the village. This lovely white horse (white in summer!) is 30 years old and in fine health.

A good start to the riding year for Robin.

Bespoke stirrups

We bought child-size stirrups and stirrup leathers for Robin recently. Today she came to have them fitted on Sienna's saddle.

Hugh and Hester made new holes in the over-long straps. While Robin was being measured, a trestle took the place of Sienna. The stirrups look very short but then, Robin is only four.

Sienna was brought from the lower field, accompanied by Uhlyara who always wants to be included in games and outings. Sorry, Uhlyara, not this time.

Robin got busy with the brushes and curry comb. A horse must always be groomed before setting out.

Sienna's legs were brushed from top to hoof.

Her mane is a long way up but Robin managed very well.

What does Sienna do when Hugh cleans her hooves? She raises her leg like this: Robin demonstrated.

A lesson learned today: You must never stand between the horse and a post, just in case she moves and crushes you.

Up in the saddle at last.

Robin learned how to lean back when going down a hill (in this case, a very small slope).

Round they went, three times, under the yellowing beech trees, while the other horses grazed quietly in the lower field. Hester and I could hear Robin talking excitedly all the way.

Hugh tried to persuade Sienna to gently trot but she wasn't really in the mood for that. She preferred to have Hester make a fuss of her.

A kiss from Hugh and a sweet treat from Robin after her perfect autumnal ride.

Digging for water

Here in Central France, we're having a dry summer so a hose pipe ban has been imposed. Our plants must fend for themselves, although some of the lucky ones get the rinsing water from washing up.

Since the spring in the horses' field has all but dried up, Ingeborg is having to bring water twice a day.

Hugh spent the morning digging out the mud from the spring to allow what little water there is to rise.

As soon as they saw movement and heard the sound of Hugh's shovel, all five horses came up from the lower meadow to investigate. Uhlyara wanted to jump in with Hugh. She stayed while he worked and even tried a little taste of the mud.

Lots of mud was thrown up onto the grass as the water level increased slightly. There's life in the bottom of the puddle, some sort of beetle hiding deep down.

Further away there is another hidden spring, marked long ago with a post. The grass around it is squelchy and damp. Hugh hooked away the brambles and weeds.

In a far off field, downwind from us, we saw a deer feeding on stubble. His family were not far behind.

At last, the spring was revealed. We could see the faintest movement of running water. By this evening, the muddy water will have cleared and the girls will be able to drink.

Learning early

Even before she was four years old, Robin loved horses and the idea of riding. Yesterday Hugh saddled Sienna and Robin rode her around the big fields.

She loved every minute, even the bumpy bits. She learned how to hold the reins correctly by practising with a halter rope. Robin is very serious indeed about her riding.

Round the fields they went, under trees and along the path which has been specially cordoned off for Liberté so that she won't eat too much grass. The other three horses wanted to join in and followed them all the way.

Thank you for your patience Sienna. Have a sweet.

You scratch my back...

and I'll scratch yours.

Horses can be clever. I hadn't realised how well they communicate until the other day when I saw Sienna nibbling at Liberté's back. Hugh explained that Liberté had touched Sienna's back to tell her where the itchy place she couldn't reach was. Then Sienna scratched it for her with her teeth. A lovely example of their closeness.

This is how the two youngest help one another. They stand in the shade, head to tail, and flick their tails to shoo the flies from each other's eyes. Cool cooperation!

Waiting for the farrier

Yesterday afternoon Sienna and Uhlyara had an appointment with the farrier. Hugh and Ingeborg file their hooves regularly but they are trimmed and inspected annually by a professional.

We walked down to the mares' field to bring Sienna to Ingeborg's garden, taking our time and enjoying the walk. The farrier was due any time after 3.

The trotters in a nearby field were very excited to see Sienna walk past. She was more interested in eating luscious long grass as we went along.

Adrian and Luis, Ingeborg's nephews, waited with us while the horses made short work of the grass in her garden.

To pass the time, each mare was groomed in the shade of the walnut trees.

Sienna and Uhlyara started eating the hedge; Luis followed his uncle from atelier to forge where Laurent was working on the wax stage of a sculpture. It was getting late.

At 6 o'clock David arrived. He had already done a full day's work and was due to travel on to shoe another client's horses.

He wears steel reinforced shoes, specially made to protect him from those hooves, and a heavy leather apron with extra-thick flaps for the knees.

Uhlyara did very well. She is only two years old and unbroken. Sienna was patient and well-behaved, as you would expect a nine-year old to be.

Sienna was so relaxed that she began to nod off. Look at her bottom lip and her drooping eyelids!

Little Luis waited patiently with a big bouquet of dandelion leaves for Sienna.

After a cool drink in the garden, Luis rode Sienna bareback down to her field where she resumed her quiet life with Joy and Liberté among the buttercups.

The quiet walk up the lane to the village is always a pleasure.

Robin and Merlijn

It's always a pleasure to welcome little Robin to La Borne. This time she came with  Merlijn from Amsterdam. They are Very Best Friends.

Of course, they were longing to ride Sienna so we all trooped off to the mares' field with the children's parents.

Full of confidence, Robin sat well, clasping a handful of Sienna's mane. Hugh led them round the field - and then round again, after which it was Merlijn's turn. Merlijn is hardly ever without a smile. He is nearly four years old.

After their rides they brushed Sienna. Robin paid special attention to her front left leg and Merlijn concentrated on her chest - with Papa's help.

Sienna likes to be scratched and made the most of Hugh's attention.

Our patient mare was rewarded with sweet treats.

Last of all, we walked along the lane to Bronze's field where Robin fed him his evening muesli. They are quite used to one another now.

We enjoyed our afternoon. Come back soon, Robin and Merlijn!

Jolie filly

Uhlyara, Ingeborg's pride and joy, was two years old this week.

We have followed her progress since her birth and it's good to see how well she is growing. She is almost as tall as her mother, Joy.

Next year she will go away to be trained; later she will take part in endurance competitions. At present, she's enjoying the new spring grass and the company of the other mares.

Robin's back!

Robin came back to France from Amsterdam with her parents, Hester and Dan.

Horses are her best thing and she couldn't wait to visit Bronze and the mares.

She gave each horse a carrot - several carrots! - and helped Hugh take hay to spread on the field for them. Nothing was too difficult for Robin.

She rode all round the paddock on Sienna then thanked her for her ride with a treat.

Walking along the path to Bronze's field we found a dead mouse. After examining it, Robin covered its body with leaves.

Bronze ate up his muesli nicely with close attention from our beautiful little visitor.

Next she raked the hay into a tidy pile and carried a fresh supply into the stable for Bronze's evening snack.

After her hard work it was time to go home to our house for tea and apricot cake.

Come again soon, Robin. You're the best stable girl around!

Spring grooming

The warm spring weather makes Sienna's coat itch. There's nothing better than a thorough grooming.

See how she loves to be brushed, first with the curry comb to remove the mud she's been rolling in, then with other brushes and lastly with these softer ones to make her coat shine.

Her tail and her mane are combed and now she's beautiful again.

Hugh gives her a sweet treat as a reward for standing still so patiently. She likes to bend low to take it, a little trick which is good for keeping neck muscles supple.

Sienna's companions look on sadly. Their turn will come soon - Ingeborg and Laurent will be back from Brazil in a few days and they'll have all the attention they could wish for.

Introducing Robin

This is our four year old friend Robin. She lives mostly in Amsterdam and sometimes in France where her parents have a home near ours.

Robin loves horses and wants to learn to ride soon. She already has the right hat for riding. Lessons are sure to follow.

We took her and her father Dan to introduce her to Bronze. She helped to feed him and gave him apple-flavoured horse sweets.

Robin helped Hugh carry hay into Bronze's stable.

Then she 'rode' him for a while, holding tight to his mane. (Dan held tight to his daughter!)

Liberty was pleased to see her and Robin was ready with the sweets. Last of all, she brushed Sienna's muddy coat and sat on her back while Sienna ate her supper.

Well done, Robin. You were brave. You'll be a good horsewoman!

Taking over

Tomorrow Ingeborg and Laurent leave La Borne for their annual holiday. They're off to Brazil and plan to visit scary, swampy places to see caymans from the 'safety' of a canoe. The temperature is 40 or 50 degrees over there.

We will take over care of their four horses, as well as our own, during the six weeks they will be away.

Fresh water for Bronze, Ingeborg's stallion, has to be collected from the lavoir. We noticed frogspawn in the water. The frogs around here are mating early!

Liberté, Uhlyara and Joy were waiting at the gate for their evening feed. Sienna hasn't seen Hugh for a while and wanted special attention.

Here they are, all four, enjoying their muesli and hay before nightfall. How much better than staying all night in their snow covered field!

Bronze is in excellent health, compared to last winter when he injured a leg. Ingeborg will miss him.

Happy holidays, you two!
